Chapter 12

That night, Naomi and Ruth tucked me in. Naomi sat on the edge of my bed. “You were very quiet tonight,” she said. “Is anything troubling you?”

“Can we help?” Ruth asked.

I shook my head. “No. I guess I just had a quiet night. That can happen sometimes, don’t you think?”

“Sure,” Naomi said. She patted my knee under the thin blanket. “We just wanted to make sure. You aren’t sick, are you?”

I practically laughed. “No. I feel fine.”

Naomi felt my forehead. “Okay, you look fine.”

“Does she have a temperature?” Ruth asked.

Naomi smiled at me. “Of course she has a temperature. Everyone has a temperature. What you mean to say is, Does she have a fever?”

“Okay, okay, Dr. Beedlemeyer,” Ruth said, sounding a little annoyed. “Does she have a fever?”

“Nope,” Naomi said. “She just has the quiets.” Then she kissed my cheek. “Good night.”

“Sleep tight,” Ruth added.

I waited until they were gone, and then I set my palm on the place where Naomi had kissed me. I left it there, maybe all night. I felt like I belonged to them.

The next morning I felt normal again. I washed and got dressed and wrote in my notebook:

Naomi kissed my cheek last night. The only other person who ever kissed me was Millie, and I can barely remember it.
